Screen simulator

The operator software exactly as it appears on the Liberandum’s phone, running against a simulated Liberandum. Your goal on this page: find Marc’s iPhone. The guide below takes you there, one step at a time.

Your mission

Find Marc’s iPhone

Marc went hiking on these trails and hasn’t come back. His iPhone is somewhere in this forest, with its Wi-Fi hotspot enabled, and Bluetooth as well. You’re at the trailhead parking, between the bay and the forest, with a Liberandum. Each step ticks itself off as you do it, and the current one also shows beside the movement controls, under the map.

  • Controls: ↑ ↓ walk, ← → turn, Shift runs, Space pulls the trigger, + − zoom the map. You can also click the map to walk to a spot.
  • Try it without Show emitters, and keep that button to check your work at the end.
  1. 01

    Open Passive mode

On the Liberandum’s dashboard, tap Passive mode. It shows a live graph of one band, in the direction the antennas point.

  2. 02

    Stay on Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz

Marc’s iPhone has both its Wi-Fi hotspot and Bluetooth on. The hotspot transmits more strongly and carries farther, so leave the band selector on Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz.

  3. 03

Raise the gain to about 15

Marc is still some way off, so his peaks are small next to the noise. Tap + next to Gain until it reads about 15: the noise rises a little, Marc’s peaks rise a lot.

  4. 04

    Turn a full circle

Turn slowly through 360° with ← → or the turn buttons, and watch the graph. Marc is near passive mode’s 100 m limit, so his peaks show only while you point almost straight at him. Note the heading, shown above the movement controls, where the peaks are tallest.

  5. 05

    Walk toward the tallest peaks

Turn back to that heading and walk about 25 m: hold ↑, add Shift to run. The peaks grow as you get closer.

  6. 06

Sweep again and keep closing in

Every 20 m or so, stop and turn a full circle to check the direction. Closer in, the peaks show over a wider arc: head for its middle. When the peaks hit the top of the graph, lower the gain. Keep going until they stay tall even at gain 5.

  7. 07

    Switch to Active mode

Tap the back arrow at the top left of the screen to return to the dashboard. Tap Active mode, choose Wi-Fi and Victim Mode, then OK.

  8. 08

Choose Marc’s iPhone as the victim

Tap Victim. In the list, choose Select from a nearby device list, then OK. Tap Scan, tick the circle in the Select column next to Marc-iPhone, his hotspot’s name, then tap OK.

  9. 09

Pull the trigger in a few directions

Click Trigger, or press Space, once per scan. Each scan that hears Marc’s iPhone draws a line on the screen’s map from where you stand. Scan facing at least two different directions: the strongest line points at Marc.

  10. 10

Walk the strongest line to Marc

Face along the strongest line and walk. Scan again on the way to stay on it. You’ve found Marc when you’re within 20 m of his iPhone.

In this area

Marc’s iPhone, with its Wi-Fi hotspot and Bluetooth on. Other signals share the air, as they would in the field: two Wi-Fi networks, a teammate’s earbuds and an aircraft distress beacon deeper in the forest (406 MHz bursts and a 121.5 MHz tone). In passive mode a transmitter shows only within 100 m, inside the antenna’s teardrop, which the field map draws to scale. The map shows only Marc’s iPhone, and only when you press Show emitters.

What is simulated

The screens are the Liberandum’s own software, version . The device behind them is simulated: radios, GPS, compass, battery and services. Orion, the AI, is not connected to the simulator yet, and its screens say so.

Screen size

The phone screen is always 820 × 360, as on the Ulefone Armor 27T Pro+ held in landscape, so the screens lay out exactly as on the device. Real size shows it at its physical size; calibrate once with a bank card for an exact match.
